25 killed on first day of Songkran

Twenty-five people died and 348 were injured in road accidents on the first day of Songkran’s “seven dangerous days” yesterday.
The roads are full of people travelling back to their hometown on the first day.
The most common causes of accidents was drunk driving (25.31%) and speeding (24.38%) with over 80 percent of the crashes involving a motorcycle, the Ministry of Transport revealed in a press conference this morning.
The province with the most accidents so far is Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) and Nakhon Sri Thammarat with 19 accidents each.
Officials have set out 2,243 checkpoints across the country, with over 65,000 police officers employed.
Yesterday, officials fined 20,863 people for not having a license and 20,271 for not wearing a helmet.
Transport Minister Sanit Promhawong instructed officers to help ease traffic and strictly enforce laws during the holiday, especially drunk driving.
He stated that the breathalyzer results for public transport drivers  must be “zero”, Post Today reported.
